How close was Eduardo Nunez to reunion with Yankees?

The Yankees expressed interest in a reunion with infielder Eduardo Nunez over the winter.

Nunez, who was a free agent, heard from his former team, but a potential return to the Bronx never got beyond that point.

My agent called me, they had interest in bringing me back to New York, Nunez told NJ Advance Media. But that wasn’t in my plan.

Who’s favorite in AL East?

If one of L.A.’s other defensive tackles can impress in the offseason, the Chargers could look to part with Mebane and fill out the depth chart with cheaper talent. Los Angeles would save $4.5 million by parting ways with Mebane.

The Los Angeles Rams made a pair of trades this offseason to upgrade at cornerback. The team added both Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters, who are projected to form the starting duo. Returning Rams Troy Hill and Kevin Peterson will look to provide depth behind them, along with offseason acquisition Sam Shields.

The National Football League is a bottom-line business, and the bottom line doesn’t always have to do with performances on the field. What have you done lately doesn’t even accurately sum up the business of football. When teams make their final cuts down to 53 players, age, draft status and salary can factor in just as much as how a player is performing.

Because of this, numerous talented players are always released at offseason’s end. Fair or not, it’s going to happen again this year. We’re here to try figuring out 32 of the top players who could be headed to the cut pile. We’ll pick the best player from each team and discuss the situations that could lead to his surprise release.

Center A.Q. Shipley has started all 16 games in each of the past two seasons. He isn’t likely to go anywhere. The Cardinals also have John Wetzel, who has made 19 starts in two seasons, and rookie third-round pick Mason Cole.

If the new Cardinals regime isn’t happier with Boehm’s performance than the last one was—he was benched in favor of Earl Watford before injuries forced him back into the lineup—he could be out. However, Boehm has both the talent and the experience to catch on elsewhere.colts_126

Raiders’ Marshawn Lynch has hilarious comment about Jon Gruden

This is pretty fun stuff. Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch teamed up with backup quarterback — and real life cousin — Josh Johnson to make this video to reveal the Raiders’ upcoming 2018 schedule.

Both guys’ reactions to some of the games on 2018 slate are pretty hilarious. But, what was most comical here is what Lynch had to say about new head coach Jon Gruden.

“I think Gruden must have cut some side deals. Ya feel me? We’ve got a lot of prime-time games, Lynch jokingly said.”

A class-action lawsuit has been filed against the Jets, claiming the indisputable: The Jets, by now selling per-game tickets to sit among those previously forced to buy PSLs, have made those PSLs, purchased for thousands of dollars beyond the cost of per-game tickets, virtually worthless.

The purchasers — the most financially devoted Jets fans — became baited-and-switched suckers.

The suit does not, as far as I know, yet include Roger Goodell as a defendant. But, given his bogus public come-on claim that PSLs “are good investments,” it should.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Hawks have granted coach Mike Budenholzer permission to speak with the Phoenix Suns about their head-coaching vacancy. Budenholzer led the Hawks to the Eastern Conference finals in 2014-15, but the team declined every season since, missing the postseason altogether in 2017-18 to end a 10-season streak. Budenholzer, an Arizona native who has two years left on his contract, had been Atlanta’s president of basketball operations until he relinquished front office control with the arrival of new GM Travis Schlenk in the spring of 2017.

Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer has been meeting with Phoenix Suns management and ownership on Monday and Tuesday, and a sense is expected to emerge soon whether there is a pathway to Budenholzer becoming the Suns’ next head coach, league sources tell ESPN.

Clifford, who took a medical leave of absence earlier this season, had been with Charlotte since their final season as the Bobcats. But back-to-back seasons finishing 10 games below .500 marked the end of his tenure with the franchise. Newly hired GM Mitch Kupchak will now lead the search for a coach who can lead the Hornets to their first playoff series win since 2002.

The Chiefs are still in front.

This is big for Dallas, too. Philadelphia has the division on lockdown but is behind Minnesota for the top playoff seed. The Eagles need to keep winning and need a little help from Vikings’ opponents so they can be up two games after Week 16, before the rematch with the Cowboys.

The worst thing, however, would be the Rams slumping and falling to 10-6 from their current 9-3, while the Seahawks jump up to take the NFC West with a second win over the Rams. That’s because Los Angeles, like Green Bay and Atlanta, beat Dallas earlier in the season.

Which is harsh to say about Mahomes. But Reid deserves the benefit of the doubt about whether his quarterback is ready to play under playoff-contending conditions — at least more benefit than Buffalo coach Sean McDermott deserved.

Reid needs to fix his offense, that’s for sure. The Chiefs are very lucky the AFC West has played out the way it has — the rotten start by the Chargers, the rotten ongoing stretches by the Raiders and Broncos — or else they wouldn’t still be in control of the division.

Smith is still looking over his shoulder. Reid shouldn’t panic yet, not with five weeks left.

But Reid has had his hand on the trap door before, and he’s not afraid to throw it open.

Reports began to swirl on Sunday that McAdoo could be sacked as early as Monday depending on the team’s Week 13 performance.

In a video produced by the Bears, Miller shared his emotional story for the first time about what happened during a play that would ultimately change his career. When the injury initially happened, Miller said he heard his leg “pop,” but he didn’t think it was that bad.

Prior to his decision, as Ohtani moved closer to jumping from the Nippon-Ham Fighters in Japan to an MLB club, Manfred and Dan Halem, the commissioner’s chief legal officer, warned club executives time and again about following the rules in their pursuit of the 23-year-old star.

“I can’t recall a topic more fully communicated with teams than the rules of engagement with Ohtani,” another official told ESPN.

Manfred and Halem have spoken repeatedly at owners meetings about the potential for rule-breaking. At the most recent general manager meetings, last month in Orlando, Florida, Halem reiterated to club officials that any team found guilty of violating the rules would be hit hard.

The Giants on Monday fired their head coach of nearly two years amid a disappointing 2-10 season, NFL Media first reported.

Giants president John Mara confirmed the news during his Monday press conference, adding that general manager Jerry Reese was also relieved of his duties. He insisted that Eli Manning’s benching was not a factor in the decision.

Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo was named interim coach for the remainder of the season and Kevin Abrams will serve as interim general manager.

The Giants seemingly hit rock bottom during Sunday’s loss to the Raiders as Geno Smith started at quarterback in place of veteran Eli Manning, who had been benched last week.panthers_014

Titans vs. Steelers: How to watch, live stream ‘Thursday Night Football’

Per Bovada, the Steelers opened as 7-point favorites over the Titans, and that spread remained intact as of Thursday morning. The over/under points total was set at 44 1/2.

Getting caught up in the numbers with Big Ben has been a bad way to measure him over the years, yet it took some gaudy stats to remind us all of the big impact he’s still capable of having. Go figure.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Middle Tennessee’s Brent Stockstill hooked up with Patrick Smith for a 21-yard touchdown to tie the game at 10. That started a scoring frenzy which saw both teams combine for 35 points in the final quarter. Much to the chagrin of those on the under, the game went to overtime, level at 24.

As much as it would be fun to have a de facto championship game to decide the division in Week 17, Jacksonville’s overall play and schedule edge is bound to develop a good cushion before then. Luckily for Tennessee, as bad as Buffalo and the rest of the wild-card hopefuls are now, even a 3-4 slump will look good enough to stay in the AFC playoff picture.

Still, it’s important for the 49ers to play Garoppolo before the 2017 campaign ends. Doing so gives him a head start on the 2018 season, when San Francisco should be fielding a more talented roster from having high draft picks and ample cash to spend in free agency.

Garoppolo’s performance also could determine just how much of a financial commitment the 49ers are willing to make toward keeping him.nike_bills-115

Patriots’ Tom Brady on possible trade: ‘Player movement is not new’

Brady, already the winningest quarterback in NFL history, broke a tie with Brett Favre and Peyton Manning last month to earn the most regular-season victories (189). His extensive list of records and accomplishments while with the Patriots also includes most division titles (14), Super Bowl wins (5) and Super Bowl MVPs (4).

The Patriots (6-2) are scheduled to visit the reeling Broncos (3-5) at 8:30 p.m. ET Sunday.

Whether it took Fiala a month to find that form, or that the addition of Turris brought out his best play, there’s no question an explosive offense has gotten even deeper.

“We are changing our mindset and playing more offense,” Fiala said. “We are attacking the game and that’s what we’re doing now to find success.”

The Predators (12-6-2) figure to find more success in this one. Montreal (8-12-2) has struggled in every facet of the game in coach Claude Julien’s first full season, and key injuries haven’t helped a thin roster.

Trailing by four with just over seven minutes to play, a stop from the Dolphins defense would have given Culter and Co. a shot at the win. Instead, the Raiders drove 87 yards in six plays, aided by back-to-back penalties on the Dolphins, setting up a Lynch 3-yard TD run to make it 27-16.

As the Pirates weigh decisions on whether and when to move Andrew McCutchen and Gerrit Cole, both of whom are part of this projection, it’s worth considering how Pittsburgh plans to escape the middle by spending up to its budget just to retain its core. If those two stay, and there are arguments either way, then the Pirates would still have to do some uncharacteristic spending to move the needle for next season.

Papa John’s apologizes for comments about NFL player protests

Papa John’s, which came under fire for blaming the NFL’s handling of player protests for declining pizza sales, used Twitter Tuesday to apologize for the potential divisiveness of its stance.

The statements made on our earnings call were describing the factors that impact our business and we sincerely apologize to anyone that thought they were divisive. That definitely was not our intention. (1/3)

The Giants are attempting to turn around a losing season as they sit at 2-8, but the good news is the team won on Sunday against the Chiefs after losing three straight games.

While coach Ben McAdoo called a brutally honest film meeting last week to point out the lack of effort from his team in their loss against the 49ers, the players are crediting Eli Manning’s pregame speech as the fire to spark the Giants and give them a win in Week 11.

“In pregame he gave a fiery speech that got everybody riled up,” running back Orleans Darkwa said, via Newsday. “To have a guy like that who has been through so much, who has those two Super Bowlrings, we follow his footsteps in everything.”

The Bengals came into the season with two new weapons for Andy Dalton in John Ross and Joe Mixon, sparking hopes that the offense could be turned around from a poor 2016. But the offense has regressed. It hasn’t been all Dalton’s fault due to bad offensive line play, but he certainly takes his share of the blame, and has missed on a number of throws he should’ve made. — Katherine Terrellnike_patriots_1391

Every person behind home plate except Larry King stands up.

When Matthews and Belfry reconvened in July, they sought to borrow from a familiar source. During his 21-year playing career, Leafs president Brendan Shanahan developed a two-touch move that tapped passes into his sweet spot, letting him swiftly shoot without having to settle the puck, like a volleyball player setting and spiking by herself. “That is unbelievable,” Matthews said after trying it once, and every subsequent session included at least five minutes of practicing Shanahan’s technique.

Did we think it was gone? This guy in the white T-shirt is the first out of his seat; Marlins Man looks grumpy because he was actually looking down when the pitch was delivered, and now it seems that he’s missed one of the greatest walk-off homers of all time at the one-second mark.

His wife, Wilhelmina Attles, son, Alvin Attles III, and Hall of Famer Rick Barry represented him during an on-court tribute after the first quarter.

“Great to honor him,” Kerr said. “I know our fans who have been following us for a long time know about Al’s influence, but 57 years with the organization, obviously he won the championship with the team in `75, was GM, drafted Chris Mullin, one of the best players early on in the Warriors history. He’s pretty much done it all. Fitting tonight we will honor him and his family. We know he’ll be watching on TV. I hope he’s not offended by my suit.”

Wizards: Washington shot 15 for 33 on 3s. … C Ian Mahinmi played almost 13 minutes after he had been questionable with a sprained left ankle.

“I can’t overstate how good they all were. I can still picture their infield practice. It was like a circus act, a high-wire circus act that left you mesmerized and a little intimidated. Gurrriel at first, Antonio Pacheco at second, German Mesa at short, Omar Linares at third. Their gloves never seemed to touch the ball. I wanted to learn how to do that.canadiens_012_3b8eae009f3fa58e-180x180
